Pepsi Is Here

I just got back to campus today and found that the school now carries pepsi products. Any thoughts? I know that some folks wanted to see soda products eliminated all together... but I have to admit that having the option now puts us in a better position to negotiate other non-carbonated, healthy, and good tasting soft drinks.

It's all about the professor...

I probably needed to post this under academics, but I didn't want this professor to potentially see it. I've looked on rate my professors and there's only one review there for her and it's really not a good one. Could anyone tell me what they think of professor Citlali Miranda-Aldaco for spanish 120? It's later in the day which is why I wanted to take it instead of the other class that starts at 9 am (which is taught by a teacher with great reviews). Any help here?

Where do you get your news?

Given all the mudslinging and bullshit that goes on in the political news media today, its very important to get a well rounded perception of ongoing events. I myself love to read the editorial section of newspapers (both liberal and conservative leaning) to gain perspective to those annoying headlines about "who is winning" presidential elections or international nuclear energy disputes. Where has the discussion of policy substance gone? Its managed to cling to the headlines of the modest editorial sections stuck in the back of the papers (and even there it doesnt offer much over Bill-O and Olbermann).

Where do you get your news? Why? Do you think Fox, CNN, MSNBC, NYtimes, Wall Street Journal, etc. are total bullshit?

I myself find www.realclearpolitics.com to be a great resource to find good editorials and stories on the top headlines. They essentially filter through all the headlines one might find at http://news.google.com and compile a list of links to commentary that is pertinent to the stories of today. There isn't a clear bias on the content that is linked - for every thomas friedman and david brooks article theres a link to oppsoing commentary. They also do a good job of compiling all presidential polls and averaging them out to find out where in fact candidates may stand - you'll be suprised with the findings... they dont mirror the headlines at all.

Additionally, I check out politico.com and thehill.com for washington political news. The journalists on this site camp out all over DC and offer great insight into lesser known but highly important events in capital hill, the white house, and even the court.

Does anyone know of other resources like this? Any good blogs (I dont really read too many other than an occassional peak at Dailykos).

Summer Reading - Whats on your List?

So, what are you reading this summer?

I have only one book on my list right now and I am hoping to be inspired by some of your own personal choices. Its All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President by Mary Matalin and James Carville. A buddy of mine gave me an autographed copy and said it was a MUST READ... I'll take him at his word.

If I find more things I am reading I will be sure to post them. I reccomend the books I listed in the winter break reading thread to almost everyone. Who Killed Daniel Pearl is a must read if you want to have any sort of idea as to wtf is going on in Pakistan with state links to terrorism - a likely issue to be addressed in the future.

Goucher VPN connection

Hi, I have been trying to get onto the goucher vpn from home; I am using Ubuntustudio version 7.10.
I installed (or reinstalled?) the Gnome Network Manager and the PPTP plugin, with apt-get install;
For some reason, there is a bug in the network manager which requires me to enable roaming mode
for my LAN connection, in order to veiw the VPN options (if roaming is disabled, '...manual configuration'
is the only option that appears). When I enabled roaming, I lost my internet connection, but typing "sudo dhclient"
in the terminal seemed to fix this. With roaming enabled, I created a VPN (vpn.goucher.edu), and tried to connect.
I entered my username and password, but after 30 sec. or so I got the error message "Could not start the VPN due
to a connection error". I tried GCADMIN\afaranda as the user name, but that didn't work either.
I was wondering if anybody here was using ubuntu to connect to the goucher network, and has had similar
difficulties, or can think of a solution. I thought maybe there is a setting that I need to change, that is specific to
goucher's system; or maybe that goucher's server does not like roaming mode? Any feedback is
appreciated. !!

Best wishes for the holidays, Hope everyone is enjoying their break!

----- Adam Faranda
